AT&T has been working on a streaming box for its DirecTV Now service and the company recently acknowledged the device’s existence. It confirmed during its recent quarterly earnings that this streaming box will be powered by Android TV and that it has entered beta testing. The carrier is planning to release this device in the first half of next year.
AT&T didn’t reveal any further details about the device during its earnings call. It only said that the as yet unnamed device will have a “measured’ release. This means that the streaming device may only be offered in select cities in the United States recently. We may also not see AT&T spend a lot of money on aggressively promoting its streaming device against rivals from the likes of Apple and Roku.
AT&T hasn’t said anything about the specs of this device. An FCC filing from last year suggested that it would be capable of streaming 4K video, ship with a voice-enabled remote, and have support for third-party Android apps. Whether or not these expected salient features will remain until 2019 when the device finally comes out can’t be said for sure.
The carrier also hasn’t said anything about the price so just how much this streaming device is going to cost is anybody’s guess right now.
