Unfortunately for Rocket League players, it seems that nothing has changed for now. In a statement made to Destructoid, Jeremy Dunham, Vice President of Publishing at Psyonix said, “We are really happy for the PlayStation and Fortnite communities and think that this is a great step forward. We know that Rocket League players and our own community want to know what this means for them as well, but we don’t have any updates at the moment. In the meantime, we recommend reaching out to PlayStation directly for any further comment.”
This doesn’t mean that cross-play won’t be supported ever, but for now it isn’t. Just because Sony flipped the switch on Fortnite doesn’t mean that it is enabled for all games automatically. We expect that Sony will want to maybe negotiate some kind of deal before making that decision, although in Fortnite’s case, its popularity probably helped its cause.
Other games that Sony has denied cross-play is Minecraft, and also just like with Fortnite, many are wondering if cross-play support for Minecraft will ever arrive, although some are doubtful given that it is owned by Microsoft.
