Apple Adding Depth Control For iPhone Xs In Future iOS Update

One of the features that Apple boasted about the iPhone Xs and Xs Max is the ability to adjust the depth-of-field (DOF) after a photo has been taken. In a way it’s almost like what Lytro’s cameras do, in which users can adjust the focal points after a photo has been taken. However now it looks like Apple will be adding a new feature for better DOF control.

According to a report from Macerkopf (via 9to5Mac), a new feature spotted in the iOS 12.1 beta has revealed that Apple wants to add DOF controls while taking a photo. This means that users will be able to adjust the DOF while they’re composing an image, so they can decide what looks best before snapping the pic. Of course photos can still be edited after it has been taken, but allowing adjustments before makes the whole process more flexible.

Now there have been camera apps released in the past that have allowed users to adjust the aperture of the iPhone’s camera (which also affects the DOF), but having a native option built into the camera app itself is probably a welcome one since not all users want to pay for third-party camera apps.

That being said, it is unclear when this feature will be released. While it has been spotted in iOS 12.1’s beta, it does not necessarily mean that it will be released in iOS 12.1.
