The iOS 12 update was released just yesterday and one of the features of the update that some have been anticipating, is support for third-party mapping interfaces for CarPlay. This means that if you’re using CarPlay and you’d rather not use Apple Maps, you’ll be pleased to learn that you can now use Google Maps as an alternative.
Google has announced that its mapping application will now be compatible with CarPlay and have highlighted some of the features and advantages that users can expect from it. Now for the most part Google Maps on CarPlay is essentially the same as the one on your phone, at least in terms of features.
However it has been redesigned to fit onto infotainment systems, and will support things like offline mode in which users can pre-download maps so that they won’t have to worry about being in areas with spotty reception. Users will also be able to access lists on the CarPlay version of Google Maps, and also see real-time traffic updates, and more, as long as your device is connected to CarPlay.
If you do want to check it out, just make sure to have the latest version of Google Maps on your phone, as well as the iOS 12 update and you should be good to go.
