The Smart Replies feature in Gmail is currently not optional. It’s present for all users but that could change in the near future. According to a new report, Google will soon provide Gmail users the ability to turn off the Smart Replies feature. However this functionality may only be offered to desktop users.

Google added Smart Replies to Gmail along with the recent redesign for its popular email service. It’s a smart service which provides users with short phrases that they can use to quickly reply to emails. However, the service has been criticised sometimes as well for providing not so appropriate responses.

The company has gradually rolled out its redesign of the email service and it’s going to be enabled by default by the some 1.4 billion people across the globe who use Gmail. Google has responded to criticism for the Smart Replies feature and said that it has removed some of the more inappropriate responses to ensure that users don’t have to face embarrasment.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that Google is planning to give Gmail users on desktop the ability to disable the Smart Replies feature in due course. This ability is already present for Gmail users who are on mobile.
