It had been reported previously that Samsung might open up its Bixby assistant to third-party developers so that they can create apps for the digital assistant. That’s something that Amazon already does for Alexa which has enabled the assistant to do everything from checking your account balance to hailing you a ride. Samsung has now revealed that it’s going to do the same for Bixby as well.
Samsung Mobile CEO DJ Koh has confirmed that Samsung is going to release both an SDK and an API for Bixby. This will allow developers to make apps and services that are compatible with Samsung’s digital personal assistant.
Bixby has developed a bit of an image problem. It was late to the game as Samsung only launched it in 2017. Rivals like Siri and Alexa have been around for much longer. They are also more useful now than they were back when they arrived.
Samsung’s assistant is going through that phase now and given the company’s insistence on shipping flagship devices with a dedicated Bixby key, some feel that the assistant is being forced on them even if they don’t want to use it.
Samsung would be hoping that by making Bixby more useful, it will address these concerns and get more people to use its assistant. The SDK and API will be launched at the company’s developer conference that’s due in November.
