If you have a speaker setup in place already that’s not a recent model and therefore doesn’t have an integrated digital personal assistant, don’t worry, because you won’t have to spend big money on an entirely new setup. Amazon has announced a new product today called Echo Input. It will bring Alexa to any and all existing speakers.
This small new device called the Echo Input can be plugged into any existing speaker for it to double as an Echo. It’s Amazon’s answer to Chromecast Audio and it’s much better than that as it has microphones which allow for access to a digital assistant.
The device has far-field microphones which will pick up voice commands from across the room just like any other Echo device. It doesn’t have its own speaker so the Echo Input is plugged into another speaker.
This is the first Echo device with a speaker and can add Alexa voice control to existing speakers either over a 3.5mm audio cable or Bluetooth. It’s only 12.5mm tall so can easily disappear into the existing setup. Amazon is going to start shipping the Echo Input later this year. It’s priced at $34.99.
Amazon is going to bundle it with some third-party speakers from the likes of Bose. This will enable customers to turn conventional speakers into smart speakers right from the very first day they get them.
