When Runic Games first announced Torchlight, there was undeniable excitement surrounding the project namely because of who was behind it: Travis Baldree together with Max and Erich Schaefer, the latter two being the co-founders of Blizzard North and also the creators of Diablo. Given Torchlight’s design, safe to say that many were hoping to see the magic of what made Diablo great brought into the game.
The Torchlight series then spawned a sequel in Torchlight 2 back in 2012, and for those who were hoping to see what could be next, it looks like we have our answer with Torchlight Frontiers. The game is being developed by Echtra Games following the shut down of Runic Games in 2017. The new studio will be led by Max Schaefer who has hired veterans from both the Diablo and Torchlight franchise to help lead the effort.
Details about the game are scarce at the moment, but it will continue to exist in the same universe as its predecessors. According to Schaefer, “Evolving the Torchlight universe into a shared world has always been a goal for the franchise, and I’m excited that we’re finally able to make it a reality. Torchlight Frontiers will be a living, breathing universe that will still feel uniquely Torchlight, while we add our own creative spin to the game.”
No word on when the game will be released, but those who are attending Gamescom and PAX West will be able to check out demos of it. In the meantime gamers can sign up to take part in the beta when it launches via its website, and in the meantime you guys can also check out the announcement trailer for the game if you have a couple of minutes to spare.
