Tesla’s Semi Has Been Driving Cross-Country By Itself

While Tesla might be known for its electric cars, last year the company took the wraps off a new vehicle called “Semi” which is basically an electric truck. However given that a truck would need considerably more battery than a car, one has to wonder how would the Semi fare driving across the country by itself?

Turns out it has been doing just fine, at least according to a report from Electrek in which it seems that Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has tweeted to the publication that the Semi has been driving cross-country by itself using nothing more than the Tesla Supercharger network and an extension cord.

For those unfamiliar, the Supercharger network is basically Tesla’s answer to gas stations which they hope will be placed across the country to help Tesla electric cars juice up while on the go. Naturally since a truck needs a lot more juice, the “extension cord” actually plugs into several Supercharger stations at once.

Tesla does have plans to launch their Megachargers in the near future, but in the meantime this demonstration basically says that Superchargers are more than sufficient at getting the job done. So far quite a few companies have hopped on board with Tesla’s Semi idea, such as UPS who is said to have pre-ordered 125 Semis. Companies such as Walmart have also previously expressed their interest in taking the Semis for a spin.
