Sony’s Infographic Shows How Android Software Updates Are Rolled Out

When Essential released the Android 9.0 Pie update for the Essential Phone, it basically made the phone the first non-Pixel phone to get the update, and it was all done within a day as well. Naturally this led to many wondering if Essential can do it, why can’t other brands like Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG, Motorola, and etc. do it too?

While we’re sure that there are many reasons as to why, Sony has decided to come clean and published a detailed infographic (see image below) on the stages of an Android update from its creation all the way to its roll out. Presumably the purpose of this infographic is to help users better understand the nuances that goes behind an update, in hopes that they will understand why it can’t be pushed out days after Google made it available.

According to Sony, “We always aim for the quickest possible upgrade rollout from the time Google makes its announcement to when it reaches your smartphone. And it’s essential that Sony engineers have the time to implement all our feature upgrades and test devices to meet our high quality standards.”

To that end, Sony has also promised that its Xperia models including the Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will get the update starting this November, while other devices like the XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus will get the update in 2019.
