Samsung’s consumer SSD products are well regarded and the company is adding another product to that list today. It has announced the launch of the Portable SSD X5, it’s a Thunderbolt 3 compatible external drive that’s capable of backing up a 20GB 4K UHD video in around 12 seconds.
The Portable SSD X5 isn’t really that big compared to a conventional thumb drive and yet it offers read and write speeds of up to 2800 and 2300 Megabytes per second respectively. For those who are curious, that’s up to five times faster compared to SATA-based portable SSSDs and more than 25 times faster than a typical hard drive.
This blazing fast speed is made possible by the NVMe interface and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. To take full advantage of it, you will obviously require a computer that has a Thunderbolt 3 port. The SSD itself is made out of metal and has a gloss finish. It has a shock-resistant design and can withstand drops from heights of up to two meters.
SSDs are already not that cheap and given all that you get with this package, it’s no surprise that Samsung’s newest SSD isn’t cheap. The Portable SSD X5 with 500GB of storage will retail for $399. Samsung will also offer 1TB and 2TB options for $700 and $1,400 respectively. They will be available for purchase from September 3rd.
