Samsung Announces Galaxy Home Speaker With Bixby

It had been rumored for months that Samsung will get into the smart speaker game as well. The company confirmed those rumors today as it unveiled the Galaxy Home during its Galaxy Note 9 event in New York City. It hasn’t launched this product today, the unveil was basically a teaser as the company will reveal more information about the product later this year.

Samsung has made it clear that this is a high-end speaker so it’s more of a competitor to Apple’s HomePod than to the Google Home or Amazon Echo since it promises premium AKG sound.

The speaker is capable of delivering surround sound audio using its six built-in speakers and a subwoofer which provides rich bass. There’s far-field voice recognition supported by eight microphones. Just like users say “Hi, Bixby” to activate the assistant on a Galaxy smartphone, they will be able to wake it up in the same manner on the Galaxy Home as well.

Samsung hasn’t revealed much more than this but it did promise to reveal more details about the Galaxy Home at its developers’ conference this November. It’s unclear as yet how much this smart speaker will cost and just how capable Bixby will be as some users have often found the assistant lacking in functionality compared to more established rivals like Siri and Google Assistant.
