This is according to a report from The Information (paywall; via Engadget) in which it has been suggested that NBCU could be thinking of using this radical new idea as a marketing strategy. This service won’t be NBCU’s attempt to compete against platforms like Netflix or Hulu, but rather it will be used as a way for the company to push new shows.
This means that unlike Netflix which has its own series and originals, NBCU’s streaming platform might instead be used to house news clips and series premieres instead of the entire thing, which like we said will be used for marketing purposes, or act as samplers if you will, to try and convince viewers to hop onto their network to watch the full thing.
It is an interesting idea, although exactly how much NBCU is willing to pay viewers remains to be seen. No word on when it will launch either, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.
