Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected to enter production in January 2019 with a release pegged for 2020. However according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, it appears that production of the movie has been put on hold as presumably Disney and Marvel are now seeking a new director.
For those unfamiliar with what has transpired in the past month or so, the movie’s original director (who also directed the first two movies) James Gunn was fired over tweets that he made over a decade ago. The tweets were deemed as offensive which led to Disney letting the director go, despite there being many who petitioned for Gunn to stay, including the stars of the movie who got together and penned a letter asking for him to be reinstated.
It seems that Disney has no plans on reversing their decision, which is why it’s not surprising that production has been put on hold while a new director is being sought out. It is unclear if this could mean that the movie could miss its target 2020 release date, but presumably if they find someone soon, perhaps things could still be on track.
Interestingly enough despite Gunn having been fired, it seems that Gunn’s script for the movie will still be used. This means that while Gunn won’t be behind the camera, at least some of the writing magic that made the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy movies so successful will be brought over into the third. Previously actor Dave Bautista who portrays Drax in the movie had stated that he would quit the movie if Gunn’s script wasn’t used.
