Facebook ‘Talent Show’ Feature Might Be Its Musical.ly Rival

Musical.ly is a popular social media app that lets users create short videos while they lip sync to songs and dialogues. It appears that Facebook wants to take on Musical.ly with a similar feature called “Talent Show.” The new feature has been discovered in the code of Facebook’s Android app by researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who has dug into the app’s code on many occasions in the past to uncover upcoming features.

The Talent Show feature will let users compete with each other by not lip syncing but actually signing popular songs and then submitting their short videos for review. The feature isn’t live as yet but Wong discovered an interface which lets users pick a song from a list of popular tracks.

They can then record themselves singing along with that particular track. The Talent Show feature has two separate elements titled “audition” and “stage.” Wong points out that auditions are loaded as videos.

Facebook recently inked licensing deals with all major music labels like Universal, Warner, Sony, and even indie labels so it has already done the legal legwork required for a feature like this. Wong has confirmed that this feature pulls the music from the same new Rights Manager that’s used by record labels to track the usage of their copyrighted tracks on Facebook.

Facebook hasn’t confirmed or denied the existence of this feature as yet but it’s evident that the company has been working on it. It remains to be seen, though, if and when this feature will be released for all users.
