Both retailers continue to sell CDs, but they aren’t putting as much emphasis as before. For example Best Buy is starting to take down CDs from its website, and the number of audio devices that support CD playback are just a handful. Target too has been cutting back where the retailer still sells new releases, but have scaled back on the number of CDs that they carry in its catalogue from 300 to 100.
According to Joshua Thomas, a company spokesman for Target, “Music is an important part of our DNA. We’re making changes that reflect changes in the industry and the shift in consumer behavior.” That being said, what’s interesting is that as the popularity of CDs are declining, an older physical format is being revived in the form of vinyl.
We’ve been hearing reports that some companies are starting up vinyl production again, such as in Australia where a new vinyl factory has been opened after 30 years.
