Amazon has seen much success with various hardware products including but not limited to tablets and smart speakers but its stint in the smartphone market was a disaster. It tried its luck with the Fire Phone back in 2014 which turned out to be a flop. Amazon hasn’t made a smartphone since then but if a new report is believed, the company might be working on another smartphone.

During Amazon’s presentation at the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this year, Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke was asked if Amazon was working on a new smartphone. She mentioned that not only has she seen a prototype of this new smartphone but that she actually has one in her office.

Salke said that the company “had a prototype phone that showed me the interface that they’re working on that’s about to be — that’s in the middle of being developed and coming soon.”

She added that the phone is intuitive to use but didn’t say if there’s any timeline for when Amazon wants to put this device on the market or if it’s even thinking about doing that. For all we know, Amazon might not pursue this beyond the prototype phase.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Amazon does launch a new smartphone particularly given the bad experience it had with the Fire Phone some four years ago.
