The University of Alabama has recently announced and confirmed that students will soon be able to use their Apple Watch in place of student IDs. This initiative was actually announced at WWDC 2018 when Blackboard came onto stage to detail their plans. Speaking to the Associated Press, University of Alabama president Stewart Bell said that this program was actually in development for about a year and they have been working with Apple.
“We have actually been working on this project for some time a little bit under the cloak of secrecy. It is a next-generation technology program that will allow our students to have access to security issues and things they pay for.” The feature is expected to be launched this coming fall alongside iOS 12.
The University of Alabama won’t be alone in their efforts as it is also expected to be made available at Duke and the University of Oklahoma. It will also be eventually launched for Johns Hopkins University, Santa Clara University and Temple University.
