With 5G networks set to be commercialized by next year, it’s only a matter of time before 5G computers are widely available and Intel wants to make sure that it’s there when that happens. The company announced at Computex 2018 today that it has teamed up with Sprint to start selling 5G PCs in the carrier’s stores from 2019. Sprint customers will be able to purchase 5G PCs powered by Intel’s chips starting next year.
Not a lot of details have been offered about this arrangement just yet. It’s also unclear how Sprint is going to roll out its 5G network following its merger with T-Mobile which is currently in process.
What we do know is that many Intel OEMs have signed up to manufacture 5G-enabled PCs. Intel is working on these PCs with Microsoft, Dell, HP, ASUS, Acer, and Lenovo. These OEMs are going to launch 5G laptops and 2-in-1 hybrids at some point in 2019.
Until that happens, customers can look out for as many as 10 4G LTE-enabled machines from OEMs like HP, ASUS, Acer, and Dell. They will join the 25 4G PCs that are already available from these manufacturers.
Major U.S. carriers are planning to launch commercial 5G networks by next year but it remains to be seen how quickly they will be able to scale the network across the country.
