While Android OEMs are embracing the display notch en masse, a couple of manufacturers based in China are showing the world that it’s possible to have a full-screen display on a smartphone if you’re willing to get creative with the camera placement. After the Vivo Nex, the Oppo Find X is another full-screen smartphone with an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 93.8 percent. The display stretches all the way to the top bezel with no cameras or notches getting in its way.
The Oppo Find X’s biggest selling point is surely its tall 6.4 inch 1080p OLED display which due to its full-screen nature fits in a body that can easily be held in one hand. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chip with 8GB of RAM and comes with up to 256GB of storage. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo.
While Vivo only added a motorized mechanism for the selfie camera, Oppo Find X puts both cameras on the pop-up mechanism, the 16 + 20MP dual rear camera and the 25MP selfie camera. When the pop-up tray is hidden, none of these cameras are exposed and they only come up when the camera is accessed in the phone and that’s when the top center section of the screen is raised by an internal motor.
Oppo claims that the camera tray opens up in 0.5 seconds but that being said, customers will have to get used to it if they’re planning on using face unlock to secure the device because it doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor at all. Opt for a PIN or Pattern if you don’t want the tray to pop open every time you have to unlock your phone which is dozens of times every single day. One has to think about the long-term durability of that motor after all.
The company hasn’t confirmed how much this device is going to cost but it will go on sale in China first soon. Oppo has confirmed that it will eventually bring the Find X to markets across Europe and North America.
