The iPhone X Almost Launched Without A Charging Port

Without a doubt many iPhone users were miffed when back in 2016, Apple decided to ditch the headphone jack. However it seems last year, Apple almost ditched another port, a rather crucial one in fact. In a report from Bloomberg, it revealed that at one point Apple considered not including a charging port for the iPhone X.

According to Bloomberg, “Apple designers eventually hope to remove most of the external ports and buttons on the iPhone, including the charger, according to people familiar with the company’s work. During the development of the iPhone X, Apple weighed removing the wired charging system entirely.”

However it seems that due to wireless charging still being slower compared to wired charging, Apple decided against it. This is actually rather interesting when you consider that there are rumors suggesting that Apple could replace the Lightning port with USB-C. Apple has been making the transition to USB-C with its MacBook laptops, so for the iPhone to eventually make the transition doesn’t seem entirely out of the question.

No word on whether or not ditching the charging port completely is still part of Apple’s plan, but in the meantime Apple’s own wireless charging accessory, the AirPower, has yet to launch and last we heard it could be launching no earlier than September.
