Huawei’s New Kirin 1020 Chip Will Double Performance, Boast 5G

Huawei is one of the very few smartphone manufacturers to make its own processors and a new report suggest that it has a new chip in the pipeline dubbed the Kirin 1020. This chip is reportedly being developed with the long-term future in mind and is said to be meant for 5G smartphones which means that it’s going to have a 5G modem as well.

Carriers in major markets across the globe are gearing up to launch their 5G networks. It’s expected that these networks will start coming online by next year and that’s also when we’ll see the commercial launch of smartphones fully capable of taking advantage of these next-generation cellular networks.

Huawei’s next-generation Kirin 1020 processor will reportedly offer double the performance of the company’s existing chip, the Kirin 970, which powers handsets like the P20 and P20 Pro. In addition to the performance bump, it’s also going to offer enhanced artificial intelligence features with a more powerful neural processing unit.

Since this chip will be meant for 5G smartphones, it’s expected that Huawei may not introduce a smartphone powered by the Kirin 1020 until the fall next year. If the claims are accurate then it’s possible that the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro might be the first devices to feature this new chip.
