We have heard countless reports over the past couple of months that TCL will soon be launching a new BlackBerry-branded smartphone. The leaks had revealed that this device will be called the BlackBerry Key2 and as the name suggests, it would be a successor to the BlackBerry KeyOne. TCL’s BlackBerry Mobile division has officially launched the BlackBerry Key2 today and has also confirmed its price.
As expected, the BlackBerry Key2 features a 4.5 ich 1620×1080 pixel resolution LCD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB RAM, up to 128GB of storage, and a 3,500mAh battery. It also happens to be the first BlackBerry-branded handset to feature a dual 12 megapixel rear camera system. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera up front. The device will ship with Android 8.1 out of the box.
The device has a full QWERTY keyboard like its predecessor but the key spacing has been optimized to provide a more comfortable typing experience. The fingerprint sensor is located underneath the space button and there’s also a new “Speed Key” on the keyboard through which users can trigger any of the 52 shortcuts they have assigned to the other keys. BlackBerry’s portfolio of apps such as DTK and BBM will be onboard.
The company has confirmed that this handset is going to be released in the coming weeks but a precise date hasn’t been provided as yet. It hasn’t even confirmed if there’s going to be a CDMA variant for the U.S. like there was for the KeyOne last year. What we do know is that this handset is going to cost $649 which is $100 more than its predecessor.
