The Tesla Model 3 is the first mass-market electric car from the company with prices starting at $35,000. Hundreds of thousands of people placed orders for the car when it was announced a couple of years ago but production issues have prevented the company from meeting its delivery schedules. According to a new report, almost a quarter of U.S. reservations for the Model 3 have now been refunded.
Tesla allowed customers to order the vehicle by paying a $1,000 deposit. It was initially expected that they would receive their cars by 2018 but Tesla still has a significant backlog of orders to clear which has resulted in delayed deliveries.
According to a report, almost 23 percent of all Model 3 deposits in the United States had been refunded as of the end of April 2018. While the reason behind the cancellations is unconfirmed, it’s widely believed to be the delayed deliveries that have frustrated some customers enough to give up their position in the line.
Tesla may not have lost these customers permanently as they may choose to make a reservation again when the production is more regular but it remains to be seen how soon Tesla can make that happen.
Tesla’s production numbers for the Model 3 still aren’t high as it needs them to be in order to fulfill the over 450,000 reservations that it has received for the car. The company only delivered 8,180 Model 3 cars in the previous quarter.
