New Rumor Suggests 2018’s iPhones Could Ditch Lightning For USB-C

Over the years Apple has made changes to the way iPhones are charged, starting with the 30-pin connector, before eventually ending up with Lightning which has been found on every iPhone since the iPhone 5. However a new report from DigiTimes (via Cult of Mac) has suggested that this could change in 2018.

The report claims that sources in the supply chain are claiming that Apple could ditch Lightning for USB-C. This is actually be the first time we’re hearing such rumors, although it doesn’t sound as unlikely as you would think. Apple has been transitioning its laptops to USB-C only ports, which means that for the iPhone to switch to USB-C wouldn’t be too surprising.

Plus USB-C to USB-C cables means that users can plug either end to the port and their iPhones to charge. It also does away with exclusive peripherals and makes it more convenient for iPhone users to find cables to charge their devices with. That being said, it should be noted that DigiTimes doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and more often than not gets more wrong than right, so it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
