Twitter wants to make it easier for people to get in touch with election candidates in the United States and it wants to ensure that users are interacting with the real account. This is why Twitter has announced that it will start applying a new label to profiles of election candidates in the United States. The badge will also be displayed below their name on tweets in users’ timelines.
Twitter is frequently used during the elections and it’s often the first place voters go to in order to get accurate information, resources, and breaking news. Twitter has been working to build new ways for its users to identify original sources and authentic information.
It’s what that goal in mind that the company has introduced U.S. election labels for specified candidates running the 2018 U.S. midterm general election.
The labels will have all of the relevant information about a particular candidate such as the office they’re running for, the state where the office is located in, and the district number where applicate. The label will be clearly identifiable with a small icon of a government building.
Candidates that qualify for U.S. election labels on Twitter include those running for state Governor or the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives during the upcoming midterm elections. Twitter will work with a nonprofit organization called Ballotpedia to identify the campaign Twitter accounts of candidates once they have qualified for the general election ballot for an applicable office.
