That’s what PUBG Corp. seems to believe and will be suing Epic Games over Fortnite. The company is asking the courts to determine if Fortnite might have copied the game, although interestingly enough the lawsuit appears to be targeting Epic Games Korea, who are planning a launch of Fortnite in East Asia.
As destructoid points out, it is possible that PUBG might be looking to cut off their competition’s expansion into Korea, but like we said, both games do share similarities and we guess it was only inevitable that this would happen. That being said, more developers are coming out with battle royale style games.
A good example would be Treyarch who for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be introducing a battle royale map called Blackout. Bluehole’s VP Chang Han Kim (PUBG Corp’s parent company) also released a statement which reads, “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game.”
“After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known. We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”
