In case some of you might have forgotten, Huawei’s P20 was the first smartphone with a triple lens setup, and it seems that Apple could follow in Huawei’s footsteps for 2019. It is unclear as to how Apple plans on arranging the lenses, or rather what kind of lenses we might be able to expect. However in Huawei’s case, they used the triple lens setup to create a camera system that is capable of capturing photos in 40MP resolution.
We’ve said before that megapixels do not necessarily account for image quality, but they do allow for more details to be captured which means that you’ll lose less details during a crop. At the moment Apple’s dual lens system is used to create a bokeh-like effect when capturing images using the Portrait mode.
It is unclear what a third lens might do, but some are suggesting that it could potentially be used to allow 3x optical zoom on the iPhone for the first time. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if you are holding out for a brand new camera system, maybe wait for next year’s iPhone then.
