For home users who do not have their own modem, chances are you might be leasing one from your ISP. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but if you’re hoping to save yourself some money on modem rental, then perhaps you might be interested in Netgear’s latest Orbi modem router system.
The company has recently announced its latest Orbi 2-in-1 modem router system, which as the name suggests combines both a modem and router into a single device. This is versus other setups in which the modem might be a separate device from the router. The advantage to this setup is that it takes up less space since it only requires a single device, plus having your own modem means you can pick and choose the features of a modem that best suit you, as opposed to only what the ISP has to offer you.
According to Netgear, their new Orbi modem router will feature a DOCSIS 3.0 CableLabs-certified modem with 32×8 channel bonding. They are also claiming download speeds of up to 1.4Gbps, although we suppose this will also depend on your ISP and also the traffic, but in theory it should be able to hit those speeds.
There is also what Netgear is calling Smart Connect Technology. This basically chooses the best WiFi band for each device on the network, thus potentially avoiding interference while optimizing network performance. There will also be an accompanying app that lets users better control their system. For those who are interested, the Netgear Orbi is priced at $300 will be made available for purchase soon.
