Microsoft’s Latest Acquisition Will Help Make AI More Conversational

If you’ve ever had a conversation with someone working at the concierge at a hotel or at the information counter in a mall, it’s basically that, a conversation where you can ask questions and it will flow naturally. When it comes to our digital assistants and AI, that’s where it falters but Microsoft is looking to change that with its latest acquisition.

The company has announced that they have acquired a company by the name of Semantic Machines, which they plan on leveraging to help further the development of conversational AI. As Microsoft rightfully points out, most of today’s digital assistants can only understand simple queries, such as setting a reminder, sending a message, playing a song, and so on, but beyond that they are not capable of understanding meaning or carry on conversations like you might from a human being.

According to Microsoft, “With the acquisition of Semantic Machines, we will establish a conversational AI center of excellence in Berkeley to push forward the boundaries of what is possible in language interfaces. Combining Semantic Machines’ technology with Microsoft’s own AI advances, we aim to deliver powerful, natural and more productive user experiences that will take conversational computing to a new level.”
