Instagram will now allow users to connect to their friends and family in new ways through the app. There were reports that the service might add a video chat feature to the app and that’s precisely what it has announced today. Instagram video chat is going to go live in the next few weeks, the Facebook-owned company has confirmed today.
Instagram says that more than 100 million users watch or share video on Live every single day and that the community wanted the company to enable them to experience real-time video in a smaller group. That’s why in the coming weeks, the video chat functionality will be rolled out to Instagram. This will give friends a new way to interact with each other in Instagram.
There’s going to be a new camera icon at the top of a Direct thread which when tapped will start the video chat. Users can chat one-on-one with another user or with a small group and they can keep the conversation going for as long as they want. It’s even going to be possible to minimize the video and continue the chat even as they browse Instagram or upload new stuff to their feed and story.
Instagram is currently testing out the video chat feature and will roll it out globally in the coming weeks.
