Google Photos Uses AI To Bring One-Tap Actions

Google has renewed its commitment to artificial intelligence at its I/O 2018 developers’ conference today as the company revealed new AI-powered features for many of its apps. Google Photos is one such app that has now received several new AI-powered features and one-tap actions happens to be one of those features.

Google revealed today that more than five billion pictures are viewed in Google Photos by users every single day. Most users do much more than just looking at a photo. They either want to share them with friends or up the exposure on a photo. Starting today, this AI feature in Google Photos will surface a range of suggested actions on the photos as they’re being viewed.

The options include prompts for sharing, rotating, brightening or archiving the feature. All of these actions are powered by machine learning so they are only surfaced on relevant photos. Once an action is suggested, simply tap on the prompt to complete it.

AI in Google Photos goes beyond one-tap actions. It’s also powering a new photo creation feature that plays with color. Google Photos uses artificial intelligence to detect the subject of the photo and leave them in color while reducing the background to black and white in order to make the subject pop more. It can even add color to black and white photos with a single tap.

All of these features are rolling out to Google Photos today and will be widely available to all users by next week.
