Following the controversy surrounding EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2, it seems that the company might be treading lightly when it comes to loot boxes in their other games. In fact it seems that the recently announced Battlefield V will not be featuring loot boxes of any kind, meaning that players won’t have to worry about spending more than they should.
This is according to a report from Kotaku in which an EA rep confirmed by email that the game will not have loot boxes. Prior to this, there were rumors that there would be loot boxes in the game, but they would only be used for cosmetic purposes which means that it won’t affect gameplay in any way.
However Kotaku’s source told them that this had yet to be confirmed as an official decision had yet to be made, but based on this new report, it seems that a decision has been made and there will not be any loot boxes at all. It’s actually an interesting approach that we’re seeing from DICE and EA, especially when it was also confirmed that Battlefield V would not feature paid DLCs or premium passes.
The use of loot boxes, paid DLCs, season passes, and so on have been a popular method for developers and publishers to earn money these days, so like we said for EA and DICE to do away with that model is interesting. Whether or not it will be successful remains to be seen. Battlefield V is currently set for a release on the 19th of October, 2018.
