If bezel-less displays were the major industry trend last year, it seems like this year the crown will be taken by display-based fingerprint sensors. Vivo was one of the first companies to demonstrate that a fingerprint sensor can be placed underneath the display glass and later even shipped a device to customers with that technology. Huawei has introduced a new handset recently which also has a display-based fingerprint sensor and it appears that Xiaomi is jumping on the bandwagon as well.
With other Chinese manufacturers adopting this technology, it’s only a matter of time before Xiaomi launches a device with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Xiaomi fans are waiting on the company to launch its Mi 7 flagship smartphone and recent reports have suggested that Xiaomi has delayed the handset’s launch to add new technology. The company’s CEO Lei Jun confirmed in a comment made on Weibo today that the Mi 7 will feature a display-based fingerprint sensor.
The remarks appear to have been made in a light tone but when viewed with other circumstantial evidence, it adds to the possibility that the Mi 7 might indeed have an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The Mi 7 is going to have flagship-level specifications. Previous reports have revealed that it’s going to have a 5.65 inch display with a notch and it will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. That’s the same chip you find in handsets like the Galaxy S9. It may also feature 8GB of RAM. The price is expected to be under $500.
