These days it’s starting to feel like every tech company has their own digital assistant. Apple has Siri, Microsoft has Cortana, Google has Google Assistant, Amazon has Alexa, Samsung has Bixby, you get the picture. Now it looks like Xiaomi has decided to create a digital assistant of their own.
Dubbed “Xiao Ai”, Xiaomi has recently posted a video showing off what the AI can do. This isn’t exactly a new feature as it was launched last year with the company’s smart speaker, but it looks like the digital assistant will now be integrated into the company’s Mi Mix 2S smartphones. It is also expected to find its way to other Xiaomi handsets in China through an update to its MIUI interface.
Given that Xiaomi’s phones are usually found in Asia, we doubt that we will be seeing Xiao Ai make its way to other markets anytime soon. However given that China tends to be pretty wary about Google, Xiao Ai can help fill a gap that Google Assistant can’t. Xiaomi won’t be the first Chinese company to make their own digital assistant either.
A report from Bloomberg last year indicated that Huawei was working on their own digital assistant, although admittedly it will probably be a bit hard to compete in such a crowded market.
