Microsoft’s Windows Defender Now Available As A Chrome Extension

For those who use Microsoft’s Windows platform, you’re probably familiar with the Windows Defender software which is Microsoft’s own way of protecting Windows users at an OS level without the need for additional software. The good news is that it looks like Windows Defender will now also be available as a Google Chrome extension.

According to Microsoft, “The Windows Defender Browser Protection extension for Google Chrome allows you to add an additional layer of protection when browsing online, powered by the same trusted intelligence found in Microsoft Edge. The extension alerts you about known malicious links, and gives you a clear path back to safety.”

Unfortunately it seems that for now the extension seems to work only on Chrome browsers running on Windows. There have been reports of users on Chrome OS who claims that it doesn’t work for them. The extension has been designed to protect users from phishing, which for those unfamiliar is where hackers pose as a legit organization, such as your bank, and ask you to “verify” details about yourself, except that those details will be given to the hackers who will then attempt to log into your accounts and steal your information and/or money.
