In fact the company has recently shared how they go about combating breaking news hoaxes. Twitter admits that they do not have a policy when it comes to validating content authenticity or accuracy, so in order to combat against hoaxes, they claim that they evaluate tweets based on existing policies.
This includes whether or not the tweet might have violated the company’s rules on abusive behavior, or if it goes against their hateful conduct policy, or whether or not it might be deemed to be a violent threat, spam, and so on. As Twitter had previously stated, they do not believe themselves to be an arbiter of truth.
According to Twitter, “While we were removing Tweets and accounts that broke our rules, our team was also focused on identifying and surfacing relevant and credible content people could trust. Moments highlighting reliable information were available in 16 countries and in five different languages — many within 10 minutes of the first Tweets — and also surfaced within top trends related to the situation.”
