Plex VR Lands On Gear VR And Oculus

Plex launched its Plex VR app in January this year. However, it was only made available for Google’s Daydream platform, which some of you might be aware isn’t the dominant VR platform. There are others such Facebook’s Oculus (which is the Gear VR’s software platform) and those who are on this platform will now be happy to hear that the Plex VR app has been released for Gear VR and Oculus today.

The base package doesn’t require a Plex Pass subscription so users can access Plex VR on their headsets without having to pay. They will require a Plex media server, a compatible headset, and the content they want to watch in virtual reality.

Plex VR has the ability to play local videos from the device which may include 3D videos as well as 360/180-degree video. It even offers a co-watching feature that lets users watch their Plex Media Server videos with friends in real-time. A voice chat functionality is onboard as well.

The VR experience is set in a fancy virtual apartment while there’s also an option to chose a drive-in movie theater experience, however, like the co-watching feature it’s limited to those who have a Plex Pass subscription. Only one person in the group of four needs to have the subscription to invite others to the theater.

Plex VR app is available for Gear VR and Oculus starting today.

Update: Plex reached out to clarify that the co-watching and Voice Chat features will be available on Gear VR “within a few weeks.”
