According to Facebook, in recent times they’ve removed twice the amount of extremist content that has found its way onto its platform. They have also added things like warning messages on content that was shared for informational or counter speech purposes. Facebook also claims that pretty much all the content that was taken down was discovered by them and their filters, and that the median time for content to be taken down has improved to be under a minute.
Facebook also claims that they have been working to not just remove new content, but also going back to delete old content as well. According to Facebook, “We’re under no illusion that the job is done or that the progress we have made is enough. Terrorist groups are always trying to circumvent our systems, so we must constantly improve. Researchers and our own teams of reviewers regularly find material that our technology misses. But we learn from every misstep, experiment with new detection methods and work to expand what terrorist groups we target.”
Like we said there is a lot of work being done to counter and remove extremist content, such as redirecting users to anti-terrorism videos, or in the case of the UK government, they are relying on AI to detect such videos.
