So why the need to dismantle iPhones, you ask? Because our smartphones are made from a variety of materials, and since not all materials can be recycled (or recycled in the same manner), they need to be sorted first. Daisy will help to do that and will also be able to reclaim some of the more valuable materials that traditional recyclers can’t, and also according to Apple, at a higher quality as well.
Ultimately this means that with the more materials that Apple can recycle and/or recover, they will require less the next time they build their iPhones. If this sounds familiar to you, it is because Daisy is not Apple’s first recycling robot. The company had previously built another robot dubbed Liam, and in true Apple fashion, it seems that Daisy is actually made up of parts from Liam.
Liam was said to be capable of dismantling 1.2 million iPhones per year which makes Daisy slightly more efficient as assuming there are no breaks, should result in 1.75 million iPhones dismantled in a single year.
