According to job listings spotted on Apple’s website (which has since been taken down but still listed on Glassdoor), it appears that Apple is looking to hire someone to make 5G modems, or at least that’s what’s been speculated based on the job description. It does not mention 5G specifically, but it reads, “As a millimeter-wave IC design engineer, you will be responsible for providing circuit and system solutions for multi-gigabit wireless chips.”
Given that one version of 5G networking does take place over millimeter wave frequencies, it has been speculated that this could mean that the job is for 5G development. It is possible that Apple could simply be looking for someone to work with Intel on 5G modems, but at the same time considering that Apple already makes their own chipsets and is also reported to be working on its own mobile GPU, creating their own 5G modem doesn’t sound like a stretch of the imagination.
Plus it also helps Apple to reduce dependency on outside companies, which as we have seen in the past has gotten somewhat messy when there is a falling out, such as with Samsung and Qualcomm where Apple still needs to source from them.
