Now according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is expected to spend quite a fair amount on the series itself. The report claims that Amazon will be spending (or investing) north of $1 billion on the production of the upcoming series. Amazon had previously spent $250 million acquiring the rights to the series with the Tolkien estate, publisher HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.
This also included a commit to at least five seasons worth of the series, which means that on average each season would cost the company at least $200 million. We’re not sure how many episodes there will be per season, but right now one of the best fantasy TV series is HBO’s Game of Thrones where it is said that for the final season, which is due in 2019, will cost about $15 million each.
Even at $15 million this puts it under $100 million for the entire season, suggesting that Amazon might be looking to craft something truly epic. There is no date on when Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series will begin to air, who will be starring, and so on, but we expect those details will be revealed at a later date.
