It has been consistently rumored that Apple is going to launch three new iPhones this September and if a new prediction is believed, the company’s 2018 iPhones may not ship with a Lightning to headphone jack adapter. It’s this peripheral that enables iPhone users to hook up headphones with a standard 3.5mm pin to the device even though it doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple currently ships this adapter with the iPhone.
Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis and his associates have predicted that Apple will stop shipping the adapter with new iPhones starting this year. If the information is correct, those who still want to use headphones with a standard 3.5mm pin would have to purchase the adapter separately.
Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 was a very hotly debated decision. The company decided to ship this adapter with the iPhone so that the transition could be made easier for those who were still not over losing their headphone jack. Apple already sells the dongle separately for $9.
It would make sense for Apple to stop shipping this dongle with new iPhones as wireless headphones are becoming more popular and its own AirPods have proven to be a success as well. In that case, Apple simply may not see the need to ship an accessory with the box that’s really not serving any purpose for a lot of users.
