Snapchat users can now @ tag their friends in their Story. There’s a new option in the popular app now that will detail the tagged user’s name, Bitmoji, handle, and Add button so that those who are viewing the story can add that person as well. The feature is similar to @ mentions that Instagram added back in November 2016.
Instagram introduced @ mentions to Stories in November 2016 not too long after it essentially cloned Snapchat’s Stories feature. It appears that Snapchat is now taking a page out of its rival’s book.
This feature lets users @ mention someone in the photos or videos that they capture using the Snapchat camera. They won’t see a type-ahead drop-down menu found on social networks like Twitter, though. When someone views their Snap, they will see a More option prompting them to swipe up. This will reveal the mentioned user’s profile information alongside an add button. The person who gets tagged in a story will receive a notification about it.
Snapchat has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is “testing” the @ tagging feature but hasn’t provided more details. So it’s unclear at this point in time if Snapchat will yank this feature if the test returns results that are not up to expectations. The test also appears to be limited to select users at this point in time.
