YouTube Red, Google’s premium online video platform, is heavily investing in original content as well much like other players in this space which includes behemoths like Netflix, Apple, and Amazon. While previous originals have almost all been premiered on YouTube Red, it appears that the service might be willing to take a page out of Amazon Studios’ book by premiering its next big original film in theaters first.
YouTube Red has confirmed that its next big in-house production is called Vulture Club. The movie stars Susan Sarandon who plays an ER nurse whose co-workers don’t know that her journalist son has been taken hostage by terrorists. The movie is also going to star Matt Bomer and Edie Falco.
It has also confirmed that principal photography is completed but hasn’t offered a lot of details about how it’s going to release the film in theaters first. “We don’t have any news to report on a theatrical partner at this stage,” said a representative for YouTube Red, adding that the company might provide an update once it identifies a partner.
It was never said that YouTube Red is going to make theatrical releases a major part of its strategy with a spokesperson for the company saying last year that the distribution strategy will remain grounded on YouTube Red. However, it may now be warming up to the idea.
