In a report from VentureBeat, the Ataribox has been given an official name of the Atari VCS (video computer system) where pre-orders dates are expected to be announced next month. While pricing has yet to be revealed, it has been suggested that it could cost anywhere between $250-$300, making it considerably more expensive than Nintendo’s “Classic” revivals.
However one of the differences between Nintendo and Atari’s offerings is that with Atari, not only will it play classic Atari titles, but it will also be capable of playing (some) modern PC games. This is thanks to the built-in AMD processor and Radeon GPU and a Linux-based operating system, which probably explains why it costs a lot more too.
The console was close to launching last December but at the last minute, Atari hit the pause button claiming that they needed more time to polish it and create a product that the community deserves. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled next month for a pre-order date, but in the meantime is this something you might be interested in?
