A report from the Financial Times (paywall; via io9) claims that Amazon is interested in adapting a sci-fi novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin into a TV series. The series in question is called Remembrance of Earth’s Past, although it seems to be more known by its first book, The Three-Body Problem.
The report goes on to claim that Amazon could be interested in spending as much as $1 billion to adapt the novels into a series, although there might be some hiccups regarding the rights. According to Chinese news outlets, YooZoo Pictures claims that they are the sole owners for the film and TV rights for The Three-Body Problem, which means that either Amazon would need to buy it from them or enter some kind of licensing deal, although YooZoo Pictures declined to comment if they had been approached by the company.
Interestingly enough the story’s author also seemed to be unaware of Amazon’s interest in his series, and stated that he was unclear if he would be invited to work on it. However it would be interesting if it were adapted and could help Amazon appeal to a more international audience, but until then take it with a grain of salt.
