The mobile iteration of its operating system has gradually been fading into oblivion and even Microsoft has been nudging it down that path. The company has now confirmed that it’s shutting down the push notifications service for devices powered by Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0. Once this happens, those who own these devices will no longer receive push notifications.
Microsoft says that it’s ending push notification service support for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 devices because both of them have reached their end of support dates. Additional services for these versions of Windows will also be discontinued over time.
Starting tomorrow, devices powered by the aforementioned versions will not be able to receive push notifications. The devices will also not receive additional live tile updates and the “Find my phone” feature will no longer be able to locate these devices.
Microsoft is maintaining the status quo for Windows Phone 8.1 users so they don’t have to worry about this affecting them. Microsoft says that notification services will continue to be available for Windows 8.1 until further notice while newer devices that are running on Windows 10 Mobile will remain fully supported.
This might finally compel those who have been sticking with older Windows Phone handsets to finally upgrade to a new device.
