VLC 3.0 Released With Support For HDR, 8K, Chromecast

So we know that the team at VideoLAN have been working on some new features for its VLC app, such as Chromecast support, and the good news is that it looks like the latest version of VLC has finally been released. This will bump the version of VLC up to version 3.0 and it will be bringing a ton of new features to the table.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Jean-Baptiste Kempf who is the lead developer and president of VideoLAN said that the latest version is “the result of more than three years of volunteer work”. It has been noted that the last major update for VLC arrived in 2015, which means that this is an update worth updating to if you haven’t done so already.

Like we said, the update will bring a ton of new features, such as Chromecast support for devices that support it. It will also introduce support for HDR, 360-degree video, 3D audio playback, and also hardware decoding that will support 4K and 8K video playback, although we’re not sure how many people will actually take advantage of the latter, but it’s good to know that it’s there if you want it.
