Spotify is the world’s most popular music streaming service and one that most users want their smart speakers to support. Therefore, it would make sense for the company to offer its own smart speaker. While there have been rumors in the past that the company could offer its own hardware, new job listings posted by the company suggest that a Spotify smart speaker could very well be a possibility.
Spotify is seeking candidates for the positions of Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, and Operations Manager. One of the job descriptions mentions that Spotify is “on its way to creating its first physical products” and that it’s in the process of putting together its operational organization for “manufacturing, supply chain, sales, and marketing.”
There isn’t a lot of information available right now about the first Spotify hardware product but previous reports suggest that the company wants to create a product that defines a category, like the Pebble Watch did for smartwatches and the Amazon Echo did for smart speakers. The product may even have voice control which means that it could have some kind of digital assistant built-in.
With Spotify having begun the hiring process just now, one can safely assume that it’s going to take quite some time before we see a proper product materialize from these efforts. Precisely how long that’s going to take remains to be seen.
